About Us

Liminal Medicine harnesses the best evidence-based practices to heal emotional suffering. Our philosophy is based on the strong belief in each person’s innate capacity to access their inner healer.

Our healing space is dedicated to holistic healing, personal empowerment, and deep psychological growth. Liminal’s mental health approach can produce spiritual experiences that can be truly transformative, and we work to support each person to let go of damaging, painful, often long-term patterns of suffering to enable true growth, fulfillment and balance.

 what we do

We treat people who are struggling with mental health issues that affect their lives, relationships, and everyday experiences. All of our providers are licensed and have had extensive training in mental health treatment.

We understand the complexity of emotional and mental health struggles and are dedicated to providing scientifically-informed, safe, and compassionate care.

 who we help

We provide services for those who are in need of psychological care and support. Liminal offers alternative treatments for treating depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, PTSD, and OCD. It can be a lifesaving treatment for those with more serious acute presentations.

Liminal treatment can be deeply healing for those who are struggling with life stressors, phase of life changes, developmental trauma, intrusive thoughts, substance use issues, and existential struggles.

Many of our clients come to us after having exhausted all other types of conventional treatment with little or no real relief. And many find this work to be transformative in helping to shift problematic thought patterns and behaviors and to open up to new perspectives, possibility and hope.

Liminal strives to offer a space that is welcoming and safe for all. We strive to create inclusivity around cultural identity, LGBTQI orientations, BIPOC communities, spiritual identities, and marginalized communities. Our clients include adolescents, adults, seniors, first responders, and medical and mental health professionals.  Liminal is working on finding ways to offer sliding scale and affordable services for those in need.

Celeste Monnette, LCSW
Clinical Director

As the Clinical Director and Lead therapist at Liminal Medicine, my areas of expertise include trauma-informed care, anxiety, phase-of-life issues, relationship issues, parenting, and depression. I am a licensed psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience. Grounded in a client-centered approach, I practice from a humanistic, relational lens and my strong belief that healing centers around relationships and connection. I work from a place of warmth, compassion and hope — knowing that the possibility of healing and transformation is always present.

Suegee Tamar-Mattis, D.O.
Medical Director

I am board-certified in Family Medicine, certified in alternative therapies and research from the California Institute for Integral Studies, and trained in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy at the Polaris Insight Center.  My interest in alternative mental-health therapy grew out of providing medical care and other services in local LGBTI, homeless, and Native American communities, as well as my personal experiences. I am convinced that helping people integrate their encounters with trauma is one of the most useful ways that I can help them adapt, grow, and flourish. My patients have taught me that building a strong foundation of respect, trust, and confidentiality is crucial to our doctor/patient relationship.

I hold an MA in Counseling Psychology from Meridian University, a school devoted to a client centered, humanistic approach that incorporates the principles of transformative learning. I consider Psychotherapy to be a transformative art, in that it seeks to help develop deeper capacities of the soul (courage, compassion, empathy) to embolden our hearts and embody our truest nature.  In therapy, I combine exploration of your story with an integration of your spirit to reveal how you may live in alignment with your deepest truths. You are not your story, or diagnosis, or present circumstance, you are so much more than that. My job is to help you access the light beneath all of your stories to sustain you and create greater alignment with who you really are.  My approach is interactive, direct, egalitarian and humanistic.

Before embarking on my professional career, I worked for many years with traditional healers and medicine workers. These experiences inspired a deep reverence for natural and alternative medicines as a powerful tool on the path toward connection and healing. Working with Ketamine has given me an opportunity to dovetail my training as a heart-centered, relational psychotherapist with my prior experience in alternative modes of healing.

Anne Tamar-Mattis

Anne Tamar-Mattis
Administrative Director

Before coming to Liminal Medicine, I had a decades-long career as a lawyer and nonprofit administrator, mostly working in the LGBTQI communities. I left a job as the Executive Director of an international nonprofit to help run this clinic because I witnessed the healing power of newer approaches to mental health treatment. My goal is to make this treatment accessible for more people, including those in underserved communities. I wear many hats at Liminal, and on a given day you may find me answering the phones, scheduling appointments, managing the books, or lobbying in Sacramento for increased access to care. On my days off I can be found knitting and riding horses. Oh, and yes, I am related to Dr. Suegee.  We’ve been married for 27 years.
